Avalon Beginners Course 5th July to 26th July 2009
On the 26th July we held the final session of the first NFAS Beginner's course to take
place at Avalon
Twelve candidates applied to take part in this the first beginner’s course. These consisted of three senior males with some archery experience, two senior ladies, a family of husband, wife, and three children, and two Cubs with no experience
First there were the Assessments; these were carried out with a great deal of shuffling of appointments from both the candidate’s position and Nev Wilsons. When all the assessments were completed we divided the group into two. The experienced Archers spent the remaining three weeks going round the woods with John Davison the rest were taken to a new training area in the woods behind the practice area, where they were given basic training in shooting techniques, safety rules and equipment.
Nev Wilson with help from Dennis Tyler, and Paul Rowlands over the next three weekends managed to get the candidates on the basic course to a reasonable standard, at the same time building up the training area into a comfortable enclosure for beginners.
On the final weekend the 26th of July we set up a mini 3d course which consisted of a Stag, a Skunk and two hidden mystery shots (Lizard and hissing Snake).
Each candidate in turn had to shoot the Stag and Skunk from the appropriate pegs ( Red, White, Blue ) Seniors, (White Blue Yellow) Juniors and Cubs according to their age group, they also had to shoot and find the mystery Target for this they did not no the score un
til they returned back at the start
When all had completed the course Photographs were taken results announced and a presentation was made of a Certificate, Whistle, and Pencil. The entire group returned to the Clubhouse for lunch, which was generously provided by Beverly Tarbox and June Thomas (newest members of Avalon Archers). This was a truly stressful but successful happy four weeks.
Next year same time same place but with a few modifications maybe, Good Shooting
